Telco BSS Is Key to Unlocking Value from Partner Monetization and AI

Telcos are transforming themselves into techcos. To make this commercially successful, they require a business support systems overhaul that will enable them to innovate and commercialize 5G, partner ecosystems, and AI services.

A report by IDC.

The telecommunications industry is at a crossroads. For over 20 years it has struggled to move beyond a basic business model of supporting volume connectivity services. This model has become a victim of its own success: As connectivity has become practically ubiquitous, its perceived value has been reduced to that of a utility. IDC calculates that the global compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for telco connectivity revenue from 2018 to 2023 was just 0.2%

Stagnant revenue growth has put extensive pressure on telcos to transform their commercial models and undertake deep technology changes across their business.

Success cannot be realized without an overhaul of a telco's business support systems (BSSs), which manage monetization as well as customer and partner engagement. Traditionally, telco BSS implementations deploy highly customized solutions linked to a line of business, such as a mobile generation service or fixed-line service, rather than having a single set of BSS solutions for an entire customer set. This approach has led to a highly fragmented IT landscape that raises significant barriers to innovation and the development of new features and services. Only by overcoming this fragmentation and enabling new forms of value creation, such as data insight and AI services, will telcos truly be able to call themselves techcos.
